Nana Banana was a hot mess when she first arrived at Mr. Jojo’s! Animal care and control contacted us to say they had a little dog who was owner surrender, 15 years old, bad skin, arthritis, blind… You know, typical senior dog issues. Honestly, the first thing we did was get her to the groomers. We asked for a 50% discount since she only had hair on half of her body!

And a lot of hair she had…. But only from her waist up. Her entire backside was pretty bald! They think the cause was a bad flea and tick infestation. Once we got sweet little Nana cleaned up her entire demeanor changed. For being blind she is quite the explorer. She loves to waddle around the house exploring every nook and cranny. She has the cutest waddle. She’s another resident with terrible arthritis affecting her hips and spine so she is a bit stiff when she walks, but it doesn’t slow her down…she just keeps waddling around exploring. She also loves to go outside and waddle around while exploring the backyard.

Nana is a quiet girl until around 5 PM each night. Without fail she walks into the kitchen and sits patiently, waiting for dinner. After about three minutes her patience runs thin and she slowly starts barking. She continues barking at an even pace until dinner is served. She definitely makes the best, most consistent dinner bell we’ve ever had. She is also the most polite. She never tries to eat anyone else’s dinner, and when she’s finished with hers she sits patiently waiting for her after dinner treat.

What We Do

We are a small group (me, myself, and I with an occasional helping hand) doing a lot of work, and loving every minute of it! If we are lucky, our day starts around 5:00 AM unless we hear the dreaded “I’m going to throw up on your bed” sound or one of our babies with dementia starts barking at 3:00 AM. We get everyone up and out, followed by medication, breakfast, clean-up, playtime, walks, pick up poop, clean any messes from overnight, pick up more poop, and somewhere in there we desperately try to gulp down a cup of coffee or two.

Asa (Poopsie) - 17 Years Old

Asa (Poopsie) - 17 Years Old

Poopsie has the distinction of being our first blind resident. She is another girl we took in before Mr. Jojo’s was an official nonprofit. She is around the ripe old age of 15, but has the heart of a puppy. She found her way around almost instantly… Knowing exactly what to run into before she

Butter Bean - 15 Years Old

Mr. Butter Bean was the first guy we pulled from animal care and control. He was around 13 at the time, and was a sweet little blind boy. As with many seniors who have been neglected, he had severe dental issues, and a few physical issues.  Nothing we can’t handle here at Jojo’s. Even though

Princess - 14 Years Old

Princess was abandoned in a backyard. The owners moved and left her tied to a pole in the back.  She had no access to food or water.  Luckily concerned neighbors brought her to a local rescue's attention.  We worked to get her out of that situation. She was underweight, anemic, full of

Sophia - 13 years old

Sophia came to us from Animal Care and Control.  Her and Xena are "siblings" coming from the same home.  We felt she was a little young for Mr. Jojo's, but her and Xena are a bonded pair.  There were a few rescues that were interested in one or the other, but nobody had interest in both.  We<

Xena - 15 years old

Xena is Sophia's older "sister".  They were a bonded pair that the shelter really wanted to keep together.  We were told she was 15, but everyone thinks she is younger.  We sometimes wonder if she is an imposter, but she does have a lot of "old lady" qualities.  She loves to nap, has a few

“I was 18 years old when I came to Mr. Jojo’s. Since I came here they took care of my nasty teeth! In other words, they pulled all of them but one. Trust me, it was worth the risk because I was in so much pain. I am almost 19 years old now, and going strong. I still love to go on walks, and I will try to escape out the door to run around the neighborhood as much as possible. My only complaint is that I go to a lot of Dr. appointments! The cardiologist, the eye doctor, the regular doctor… I always going to some appointment. Walks, treats, no more mouth pain, lots of love…..what else can an old man ask for! ” Chili Bean 18 Years Old

"I was around 13 years old when the nice lady from Mr. Jojo’s came to animal care and control to pick me up. She told me that even though her sanctuary was not “official” yet, because the paperwork was still at the IRS, she still needed to save me. I was so happy to hear that. Even though I could not see her (I’m totally blind!) she smelled really good! I love all the yummy food and treats we get…I love the food so much I ask for it ALL of the time. Not sure why I can’t eat 24/7, but I can deal with that as long as I know I am safe and sound at Mr. Jojo’s." Butter Bean 14 Years Old
Name author,
My new mom at Mr. Jojo’s calls me Nana Banana and sings to me all of the time. I love when she sings my name because I am blind, and since I can’t see her I love to hear her. Well, let me re-phrase that…my new mommy can’t sing at all! Actually she is terrible, but I still love to hear her voice sing my name. I’m 15 years old and my other family could not keep me so Mr. Jojo’s stepped in. I’m having so much fun here! I love hanging out and getting belly rubs. I also get to go to laser therapy for my arthritis. I feel so much better with new medication, food, and visiting my nice doctor. Nana Banana 15 1/2 Years Old
